MOVIE MONDAYS: SAVING MR BANKS
When I casually walked into my local cinema on a relatively warm Sunday afternoon to go see Saving Mr Banks two weeks ago, I honestly did not know what to expect from the film. I just knew it had Tom Hanks (I swore to myself I would see at least one of his latest releases) and Emma Thompson in it and it also had something to do with Disney.
Saving Mr Banks, to me, is about the power of imagination, the essence of Disney, the importance of standing your ground and the art of compromise. It is based on a true story that shows how something beautiful can be made out of love, heartache, disappointment, determination and a spoonful of sugar. Directed by John Lee Hancock (Snow White and The Huntsman; The Blind Side) and written by Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey; Terra Nova), but based on the script originally written by Sue Smith (Bastard Boys; My Brother Jack), this 2013 movie is sure to pull you into the world of author P. L. Travers, the woman that brought us Mary Poppins, spanning across various key moments in her life. Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility (1995); Love Actually; Nanny McPhee) stars as the highly talented Mrs P. L. Travers who is quite a stickler for detail with an amazing hairdo and Tom Hanks (Toy Story; Captain Phillips; The Terminal) plays the role of the ever cheerful and determined Mr Walt Disney. I spent most of my time thinking how cool it would have been to meet them both as well as the Sherman brothers--or watch them work at the very least. Colin Firth (Phone Booth; Daredevil; Total Recall) makes an appearance in this film as Mr Travers, a man with a wild imagination, big heart and a weakness for taking the easy road. Paul Giamatti (My Best Friend's Wedding; The Nanny Diaries; The Ides of March;) also stars in this movie which made me smile. It has been a while since I have watched anything with him in it. Ruth Wilson (Anna Karenina; The Lone Ranger; Luther) takes on the role of Margaret Goff, a loving mother who tries the best she can to take care of her family. I was constantly expecting her to kill someone as I can't quite shake the the thought of her as Alice Morgan from the TV show, Luther from my mind :/. To say she freaked me out in that show is putting it mildly.
In my humble opinion, I think this is a movie that will make you laugh, gasp in surprise, all teary-eyed and appreciate the magic that stories possess. If this sounds like your kinda movie me thinks you'll enjoy it! And if it doesn't...well, if you happen to watch it one day me doesn't think you'll hate it hehe.
