DISNEY: POCAHONTAS
It has been a while since I popped in a Disney movie. I was feeling quite nostalgic today so I decided to take a trip down Disney lane. Today's post will be about the lovely Pocahontas.
This is a great love story!
I completely forgot John Smith is English; I thought he was American. My trusted Disney guru, Luigi confirmed that he is indeed English. I think it's Mel Gibson's accent that threw me off as a child as he lent his voice for this character. He is still as handsome as ever. I was kinda peeved off when I remembered he and his crew came to Virginia with the intentions of robbing the land dry of its resources and killing any inhabitants that tried to stop them. That is not an attractive mindset. It totally awakened the political/human rights activist in me.
Anyways, Pocahontas is still one of the coolest Disney princesses ever! She lives in the most beautiful village; the wind talks to her; she has a talking tree, Grandmother Willow, for a confidant; she walks around barefoot; she dives into rivers from great heights; she is at one with nature; and she is sooooo beautiful! Her figure and skin are amazing. She's another Disney princess with waterproof make-up.
And I do realise that some of you may feel the need to roll your eyes and say that she is a fictional character but actually, I only learnt of this today, she was real. So, HA! I chose to believe that Disney stayed close to the true story. Call me mad but this is my choice.
But, on a more serious note, I shall be reading more into the story of the real Pocahontas. Judging from the few things I have found online it sounds very interesting.
Onto the music
Favourite song in this movie has to be without a doubt: Colours of the Wind
'You think I'm an ignorant savage
And you've been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don't know?
Yoooou don't knooooooooow ...
You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claaaim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a naaaaaame
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like yooou
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew you never kneeeew
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn mooooon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colours of the wiiiiiiind?
Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sunsweet berries of the Earrrrrth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're wooorth
The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my frieeends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never eeeends
Hooow high will the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you'll never knooow
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colooours of the wind
You can own the Earth and still
All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colours of the wind'.
If you have never watched this movie...well... if you have nothing else to do then watching this will be a good option. Although it was released in 1995, it is still a very good animated movie.
For those of you who were big Disney fans, did any of you go to see 'Pocahontas on Ice' when you were a kid? That was a brilliant show. I think I might still have my mug at home...
Till next time!
Luv, Mo
